The unicorn is commonly described as ferocious; for example, it is said to be an opponent of the elephant, which it would spear in the abdomen with its horn. It is also quick, even impossible to catch. The unicorn becomes docile, however, in the hands of a virgin—symbolic of the mother of Christ, the Virgin Mary. Miranda Vale had learned that Lord Rotham was a rake, when her sister's heart was broken. But Miranda couldn't resist being charmed by the man, who had such courage and daring. She and Rotham's brother, Pavel, got caught up in the adventure Rotham.
The unicorn also figured in courtly terms: for some thirteenth-century French authors such as Thibaut of Champagne and Richard of Fournival, the lover is attracted to his lady as the unicorn is to the virgin. This courtly version of salvation provided an alternative to God's love and was assailed as heretical. Medieval writers thus likened the unicorn to Christ, who raised up a horn of salvation for mankind and dwelt in the womb of the Virgin Mary. Other legends tell of the unicorn’s combat with the elephant, whom it finally spears to death with its horn, and of the unicorn’s purifying of poisoned waters with its horn so that other animals may drink.
It starts with these ideas about how you catch a unicorn, and a lot of the lore says that you need a virgin, and the unicorn will be attracted to the virgin. Then — it gets pretty explicit — the maiden should grasp the unicorn’s horn, and while she’s touching the horn, that’s when you kill it. Oh. : Madeleine Aggeler.
