NASA circulated two internal memos on the subject of Education and Public Outreach on Friday. These memos have begun to circulate outside of the agency as well. "StarDate/Universo: Astronomy for the Masses" by Sandi Preston and Mary K. Hemenway, NASA Office of Space Science Education and Public Outreach Conference , edited by Narasimhan, Beck-Winchatz, Hawkins & Runyon, ASP Conference Series, Vol. , page ,

The Space Science Enterprise pursues the study of origins, as well as studies of the evolution and destiny of the cosmos, by establishing a continuum of exploration and science. It creates a virtual presence in the solar system, exploring new territories and investigating the . Access to traditional news services with the aid of the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) public affairs office (PAO) will create immediate coverage in the form of good press. More in-depth treatments and information about the project will be made available through Web-based outreach. Space Weather is the term scientists now use to discuss the ways in which matter and energy from the sun interact with Earth's space environment. Some of these interactions produce the beautiful Northern Lights, but others can cause satellite malfunctions and even electrical power blackouts on Earth.

Scientists and educators involved or interested in Science Mission Directorate (SMD) education and public outreach (E/PO) programs are encouraged to collaborate with the Science Education and Public Outreach Forums.

Each SMD Science Division has its own Forum: Astrophysics, Earth Science, Heliophysics, and Planetary Science. The program goals include the public sharing of the excitement of space science discoveries, enhancement of the quality of science, mathematics and technology education - particularly at the precollege level - and supporting the creation of our 21st century scientific and technical workforce.

About MSGC. The Montana Space Grant Consortium (MTSGC) works to strengthen education in Montana in NASA-related fields.George Nelson, former shuttle astronaut and now education researcher, said in his keynote address to the attendees of a NASA EPO (Education and Public Outreach) conference in Chicago that, "We would do well to become familiar with these materials and promote them to teachers and schools rather than trying to create something else.".
